Opening Day of the Goodman Summer Basketball League, Presented by Events DC

The 2025 season of the Goodman Summer Basketball League officially tipped off on Wednesday, June 4, from 6pm to 10pm at the historic Barry Farm basketball courts. Presented by Events DC, the Opening Day celebration was free and open to the public, drawing a crowd of more than 2,000 men, women, and children from across the DMV.

The evening began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the new partnership between Events DC and the Goodman League, followed by live entertainment from The Front Porch and a highly anticipated basketball game.

Speakers included Angie M. Gates, President and CEO of Events DC; Lawrence Hamm and several senior Events DC staff members; DC Department of Parks and Recreation Director Feanie Freeman; and MPD Chief of Police Pamela Smith. Each shared reflections on the league’s cultural impact and the importance of continuing its legacy in Southeast DC.

There were 8 food vendors on-site providing fans and community members with delicious local bites from DC small business owners.

Washington, DC was proud to host a night full of community, culture, and competition—marking the start of what promises to be a great summer season inside the gates.
